BRS walks out of BAC meeting over two-day Assembly session

Hyderabad: The opposition Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) staged a walkout from the Business Advisory Committee (BAC) meeting on Saturday, protesting the Congress government’s decision to confine the Telangana Assembly session to just two days.

Speaking at the Assembly Media Point, former minister T. Harish Rao accused the government of ignoring urgent public issues. He cited flood devastation, urea shortage, viral fevers, student deaths in Gurukul schools, and pending demands of government employees. “We demanded at least 15 days of Assembly sittings. Villages are still without electricity and roads. People are suffering and even losing lives. Instead of addressing their pain, the government wants to wrap up discussions in two days,” he said.

Harish Rao said the Assembly should first take up debates on flood losses and the urea crisis. He also demanded discussions on the rise of dengue and malaria, over 100 reported student deaths in Gurukul schools, fee reimbursement delays for SC, ST, BC and minority students, land controversies linked to the Chief Minister’s relatives, and pending employee concerns such as PRC and DA.

BRS objected to the government’s move to prioritize the Kaleshwaram Commission report and the BC Bill within the shortened session. “We are ready to debate Kaleshwaram for four days if needed, but first let us discuss the people’s issues,” he said, accusing Congress of staging “political drama” ahead of local body polls.

Harish Rao also criticised the last-minute scheduling of Assembly business. “How can opposition parties prepare if the agenda is announced only after 9 PM the previous night? Silencing the opposition is nothing but a mockery of democracy,” he said. He declared that the BRS walkout from the BAC was a protest against the government’s attempt to evade accountability.
