BJP slams Congress move to merge 27 local bodies into GHMC

Hyderabad: The Telangana BJP on Friday condemned the Congress government’s plan to merge 27 local bodies into the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC). They warned that the move would harm governance and burden citizens.

BJP says GHMC expansion will weaken administration

State BJP president N. Ramchander Rao said the proposal to form a new “Metropolitan City” by merging 20 municipalities and seven municipal corporations would damage administrative efficiency. Speaking at a press conference, he called the move a shift towards “harmful centralisation.” He argued that decentralised governance was crucial for urban management.

Rao warned that adding over two crore people to the GHMC would strain the already underfunded civic body. This would lead to higher taxes in newly merged areas.

Poor services in existing areas cited as reason for opposition

The BJP leader questioned the logic of expanding GHMC when the existing municipalities were already plagued by poor sanitation, damaged roads, and drainage failures. Waste mismanagement and neglected public utilities, like streetlights and water pipelines, were also concerns. “Merging them into GHMC will only worsen the situation,” he said.

He accused the Congress of continuing the “Tughlaq-like policies” of the previous BRS government. He highlighted that there was no public consultation or an all-party discussion on such a major administrative change.

Merger driven by real estate interests, says BJP

Rao alleged that Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy was placing real estate interests above governance. He cited the Hyderabad Industrial Lands Transformation (HILT) policy, which involves over 9,000 acres, as evidence of the administration’s bias toward developers.

Calling the GHMC merger plan “unscientific and illogical,” Rao demanded its immediate withdrawal.

BJP MLCs Anji Reddy and Malka Komaraiah, party vice-president Banda Karthika Reddy, chief spokesperson N.V. Subhash, former MLA NVSS Prabhakar, GHMC floor leader Shankar Yadav, deputy floor leader Radha Dheeraj Reddy, and Narasimha Reddy were also present.
