Airtel partners with SpaceX to launch Starlink satellite internet in India

NEW DELHI: Bharti Airtel has announced a partnership with Elon Musk’s SpaceX to bring Starlink satellite internet services to India. The telecom giant revealed the agreement in a stock exchange filing on March 11.

Airtel-Starlink Collaboration

Under this agreement, Airtel and SpaceX will work together to provide high-speed satellite internet to businesses, educational institutions, healthcare facilities, and remote areas. Airtel will also explore integrating Starlink’s technology into its existing network infrastructure.

Starlink, operated by SpaceX, offers high-speed, low-latency internet globally. The company has a constellation of over 7,000 satellites in low Earth orbit (LEO), forming the world’s largest satellite network. The service enables seamless streaming, online gaming, and video calls even in the most remote locations.

Starlink’s Role in Connecting Remote Areas

One of Starlink’s key advantages is its ability to connect underserved and remote regions via satellites. The company provides a dedicated kit, which includes a router, power supply, cables, and a mounting tripod. The dish must be placed outdoors under an open sky for optimal performance. Users can set up and monitor the system through Starlink’s mobile app available on iOS and Android.

How Satellite Internet Works

Satellites beam internet coverage to the Earth, allowing users to access high-speed, low-latency connectivity in any location. Latency refers to the time taken for data to travel from one point to another, making it a critical factor in internet performance.

Starlink Equipment at Airtel Retail Stores
  • Airtel and SpaceX are exploring options to offer Starlink kits through Airtel’s retail stores in India.
  • The partnership may also focus on offering Starlink services to business customers through Airtel.
  • The companies aim to connect communities, schools, and healthcare centers, extending reliable internet to rural areas.

This partnership marks a major milestone in India’s satellite internet expansion, promising enhanced digital connectivity across the country.
