Uttam Kumar Reddy warns of global threat to liberal democracy at Bharat Summit 2025

Hyderabad: Irrigation and Civil Supplies Minister Capt N Uttam Kumar Reddy on Saturday warned that liberal democratic values were facing an unprecedented assault across the globe.

Delivering the vote of thanks at the closing session of Bharat Summit 2025 held at the Hyderabad International Convention Centre (HICC), he said that freedoms of thought, speech, the arts, academia, assembly, and protest were under relentless attack by extreme right-wing and authoritarian regimes worldwide.

Uttam Kumar Reddy expressed pride that the Bharat Summit was hosted in Hyderabad, Telangana, under a Congress-led government committed to upholding liberal and democratic values. He described the gathering as one of the world’s largest assemblies of progressives, liberals, democrats, activists, thinkers, doers, change-makers, and innovators, convened at a time when defending fundamental freedoms had become a global necessity.

Reflecting on the wide-ranging discussions of the two-day event, he noted that the Summit addressed critical themes such as global justice, environmental concerns, the spread of misinformation via technology, and the persistent challenges of gender and age discrimination. He highlighted that 450 delegates participated, including representatives from over 100 countries, collectively offering ideas to strengthen progressive ideals and resist ideologies of hatred, division, and oppression.

He remarked that distinguished thought leaders, political figures, activists, and policymakers from around the world had contributed valuable insights, enriching the deliberations. Uttam Kumar Reddy said that Bharat Summit 2025 had raised a strong and urgent voice for the liberal democratic world, providing not only intellectual arguments but also emotional strength to confront contemporary challenges.

Acknowledging the widespread gloom that often clouds discussions on global affairs, he observed that many felt disheartened and even hopeless in the face of rising intolerance and authoritarianism. However, he said the Bharat Summit had rekindled hope by uniting minds and hearts alike. “We have felt here that after darkness comes light, after tyranny comes democracy, and after struggle, there is victory,” he said, capturing the emotional spirit of the event.

Uttam Kumar Reddy reiterated that the Telangana Government, under Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy’s leadership, remained committed to social justice alongside economic development. He expressed gratitude on behalf of the state government to all delegates and participants for enriching the Summit with their presence and ideas.

He stressed that the event was not merely a conference but a coming together of a family united by a greater vision for humanity, one rooted in dignity, freedom, and justice. He said this spirit of unity and renewed vigour must now be carried forward beyond Hyderabad to every corner of the world where democratic values are under threat.

Emphasising the Summit’s core message, he said, “The biggest problem in any society, and in our society too, is injustice.” He called for a determined and united fight against all forms of injustice, warning that complacency would only embolden those who seek to divide and dominate.

In his concluding remarks, Uttam Kumar Reddy invited delegates to consider Hyderabad as a global investment destination, highlighting the city’s strong opportunities across various sectors. He assured that Telangana stood ready to partner with global investors while remaining committed to social justice and inclusive growth.

He affirmed that the ideas and energy generated at Bharat Summit 2025 would continue to bolster the global struggle for democracy, freedom, and human dignity.
