Urban governance focus in Telangana municipal polls, says Uttam Kumar Reddy

Hyderabad: Urban governance will remain a top priority for the Telangana government, Irrigation and Civil Supplies Minister N. Uttam Kumar Reddy said as he concluded a week-long campaign for the February 11 municipal elections.

Highlighting the state’s rising urbanisation, the minister emphasised the growing significance of urban local bodies (ULBs) in policy planning. Telangana’s urban population currently exceeds 1.36 crore, forming more than one-third of the total population of 3.50 crore. Rural areas account for 61.12% of the state’s demographic.

Addressing rallies, public meetings, and party interactions in Suryapet district and the Nizamabad parliamentary constituency—including Nizamabad Urban, Armoor, Korutla, Metpally, Kodad, Tirumalgiri, Nereducherla, and Huzurnagar—Reddy called on Congress workers to focus on tangible civic issues affecting urban life.

He assured that the government would prioritise core community needs, particularly in areas such as water supply and urban infrastructure. “Core community needs of the urban local bodies will be priority for the government,” Reddy said, adding that large-scale allocations for urban development were in the pipeline.

Rapid urbanisation adds weight to local priorities

Citing internal surveys, Reddy, who also oversees the Nizamabad parliamentary constituency for the party, predicted a strong Congress showing across key urban pockets. He credited this outlook to public approval of the Congress-led administration’s welfare and development record over the past two years.

In an effort to unify party ranks, the minister also engaged with dissatisfied cadres during his campaign stops, assuring them of future roles and encouraging collective work to strengthen voter outreach.
