TSHRC seeks report from DGP on Sheikh Riaz encounter in Nizamabad

Hyderabad: The Telangana State Human Rights Commission (TSHRC) on Tuesday directed the Director General of Police to submit a detailed report on the recent encounter death of Sheikh Riaz in Nizamabad.

The Commission took suo-motu cognizance of the incident based on a news report in a Telugu daily. Riaz had been arrested in connection with the murder of police constable M. Pramod Kumar and was receiving treatment at the Nizamabad government hospital.

According to police, Riaz allegedly tried to snatch the weapon of an Armed Reserve constable and attempted to flee. The police claimed they opened fire in self-defence, resulting in his death on the spot.

TSHRC seeks report on encounter, demands compliance with SC guidelines

The TSHRC has asked the DGP to provide a factual report detailing the circumstances of the shooting. The report must also include information on any ongoing magisterial or judicial inquiry and confirm whether the Supreme Court and NHRC guidelines on encounter deaths were followed.

Additionally, the Commission directed submission of supporting documents including the FIR and post-mortem report. The deadline for compliance is October 24. (NSS)
