Hyderabad: The Telangana Police issued a public warning against a rising fake e-challan scam, cautioning citizens about fraudulent SMS and WhatsApp messages claiming unpaid traffic fines.
In an alert shared by the Cyber Crimes Unit Hyderabad on social media platform X, police said scammers were sending messages with fake challan details and malicious links. Officials warned that clicking such links could lead to bank accounts being drained.
Cybercrime officials urged the public not to click on unknown or suspicious links received through messages. They advised citizens to verify traffic challans only through official government portals.
Fake e-challan scam targets unsuspecting citizens
Police also warned people never to share sensitive information such as OTPs, CVV numbers or bank details under any circumstances. They said fraudsters often used urgency and fear to trick victims into quick action.
The Telangana Police asked citizens to report suspicious messages immediately to cybercrime authorities. Officials said early reporting could help prevent financial losses and track fraud networks.
As part of the awareness drive, police encouraged people to share the advisory video with friends and family. They stressed that public awareness remained a key tool in preventing cyber fraud.
