Hyderabad: The Telangana Pradesh Congress Seva Dal observed Telangana Liberation Day at Gandhi Bhavan on September 17, recalling the historical significance of the day. Congress leaders paid tributes to freedom fighters and those who died during the Telangana armed struggle.
The programme was held under the leadership of Telangana Pradesh Congress Seva Dal president Middela Jitender. PCC Vice-President Kumar Rao attended as the chief guest and unfurled the national flag. He also paid tributes to freedom fighters and martyrs of the Telangana armed struggle.
Speaking on the occasion, Kumar Rao said India attained Independence on August 15, 1947. However, Hyderabad State remained under Nizam rule without joining the Indian Union at that time. He recalled the sacrifices made by Telangana’s people against oppression during the period.
Kumar Rao said farmers, youth and women had participated in the struggle and made several sacrifices. He said the people of Telangana had resisted the atrocities of the Razakars and exploitation under the feudal system.
He described that struggle as an important chapter in Indian history. Kumar Rao said Hyderabad State joined the Indian Union on September 17, 1948. He said the development brought liberation from Nizam rule to the people of Telangana.
Telangana Liberation Day represents people’s sacrifices
Middela Jitender said September 17 should not be viewed merely as a historical date. Instead, he said Telangana Liberation Day should represent people’s struggles, sacrifices and democratic values.
Jitender called on the present generation to carry forward the spirit of those who fought for freedom, democracy and social justice. He said their sacrifices should continue to inspire society.
He said progress, social equality and the protection of democracy should guide Telangana society. Moving in that direction would be the true tribute to the martyrs, he added.
Congress leaders, Telangana Pradesh Congress Seva Dal representatives and workers attended the programme. Supporters and several other leaders also participated and paid tributes to the martyrs.
