Telangana govt announces ₹1 crore aid for excise constable Soumya’s family

Hyderabad: The Telangana government on Saturday announced ₹1 crore in compensation and a government job for the family of Excise Constable Gajula Soumya, who died after a brutal attack by ganja traffickers in Nizamabad. The entire state is mourning the loss of constable Soumya.

Excise Minister Jupally Krishna Rao expressed deep grief over Soumya’s death and praised her bravery. He assured her family of full government support and said the State would always remember her sacrifice. Undoubtedly, constable Soumya’s actions have inspired many.

Soumya, 25, suffered critical injuries during an anti-smuggling operation in Nizamabad on January 23. While trying to stop a vehicle carrying ganja, the traffickers ran her over and fled the scene. Officials rushed her to the Nizam’s Institute of Medical Sciences (NIMS) in Hyderabad, but she died on Saturday night. The officials confirmed that constable Soumya had performed her duties with utmost dedication.

Soumya showed exceptional courage during the operation, officials said.

Minister Rao said the government will equip excise personnel with weapons to protect them during high-risk operations. He added that the department remains committed to the safety of its field staff and to cracking down on drug networks.
