HYDERABAD: On the occasion of May Day, Telangana Transport Minister Ponnam Prabhakar extended heartfelt greetings to workers and labourers across the state and announced that the government is preparing to introduce a new law to safeguard the rights of gig workers in the unorganised sector.
In a video message, the minister acknowledged May Day as a tribute to the 19th-century labour movement and a reminder of the struggles that secured workers’ rights. He noted that this day not only honours past efforts but also calls for continued solidarity with the labour force.
Prabhakar stated that the proposed legislation will be aimed at gig workers, ensuring they are protected under state policies and receive due support and benefits from the government. He highlighted that the initiative reflects the government’s commitment to uplifting marginalised workers in a rapidly changing employment landscape.
He reaffirmed that May Day is a moment to stand with labourers and reassert the importance of their role in society’s development. The forthcoming law is expected to be a significant step towards securing the rights and welfare of workers outside the formal employment framework.
