Telangana Assembly Speaker seeks two-month extension in BRS MLA disqualification case

Hyderabad: The Telangana Assembly Secretariat has asked the Supreme Court for a two-month extension to finish hearings on the disqualification of 10 BRS MLAs who joined the Congress. The court’s original three-month deadline expired today.

Telangana Assembly seeks more time in BRS MLA disqualification case

Earlier, the Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) approached the Supreme Court, urging it to direct the Speaker to act quickly against the defected MLAs. These legislators had crossed over to the Congress after the 2023 Assembly elections.

On July 31, the apex court ordered the Speaker to decide the disqualification petitions within three months. It also observed that long delays in such cases give undue advantage to defectors and weaken the anti-defection law. The Bench made it clear that keeping these petitions pending for years was unconstitutional.

After the order, the Speaker issued notices to all 10 MLAs. However, only eight responded, and four appeared for hearings. The remaining six MLAs are yet to attend the proceedings.

Speaker seeks two more months to complete the process

Since the deadline has ended, the Assembly Secretary submitted a plea before the Supreme Court seeking two additional months. The Speaker’s counsel explained that the hearings are in progress and that the Secretariat needs more time to complete the process properly.

Meanwhile, political observers said the Supreme Court’s next decision will determine the fate of the defected BRS MLAs. They believe the verdict, once announced, could significantly impact the political balance in the Telangana Assembly.
