Hyderabad: Telangana Industries Minister D. Sridhar Babu inaugurated the 1 Bio facility at Genome Valley, calling it a milestone in biologics scale-up Telangana. He said the centre would fast-track pilot-stage drug development while reducing costs and risks for companies.
The new facility, developed by Telangana Lifesciences with support from the Department of Biotechnology and TGIIC, is designed to accelerate biologics scale-up. It includes 500-litre bioreactors, process development labs, and an analytical suite. Thermo Fisher Scientific partnered with the State to establish the Bioprocess Design Centre for GLP- and GMP-grade molecule development.
Importantly, the 1 Bio hub addresses a critical gap in India’s biotech sector. By offering integrated process validation and scale-up systems, it enables firms to move quickly from discovery to pilot stage. This model lowers upfront capital needs and helps firms improve their speed to market.

Covering two acres, the facility features 150,000 square feet of plug-and-play labs, shared analytical rooms, flexible innovation zones, and training labs. Officials noted that this layout enables small and large firms to test processes and gather pilot data without heavy investment.
At the launch, the Minister also revealed a new Genome Valley logo and presented a design for the gateway structure at the main entry. To improve infrastructure, he announced more than Rs. 200 crore in upgrades, including road works, power lines, and streetscaping to be carried out by TGIIC. The State committed Rs. 150 crore through a PPP model, while Thermo Fisher invested Rs. 90 crore.
The site is expected to draw an additional Rs. 500 crore from private firms and create more than 500 jobs. Industry officials said the biologics scale-up Telangana initiative strengthens the State’s role in global life sciences.
Special Chief Secretary Sanjay Kumar said Telangana produces 40% of India’s pharma output and one-third of the world’s vaccine supply. He added that the new hub gives firms access to world-class biologics scale-up support.
Shakthi M. Nagappan, CEO of Telangana Life Sciences Foundation, said the centre fills a longstanding gap in India’s biotech value chain. Thermo Fisher’s Tony Acciarito and Srinath Venkatesh emphasised their commitment to helping India transform life sciences ideas into scalable products.
