Supreme Court directs states to remove stray animals from highways across India

Hyderabad: The Supreme Court raised strong concern over stray animals moving on national highways and expressways. The court said dogs, cattle, and other animals were causing frequent road accidents and putting lives at risk.

It warned that such incidents had become a serious road safety issue. Therefore, the court directed all state governments, local bodies, and the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) to act immediately and in coordination.

The Supreme Court ordered the installation of boundary fences along national highways and expressways to prevent animal entry. It also told authorities to launch animal control drives and set up surveillance systems to keep the roads safe.

In addition, the court instructed officials to remove all stray animals from highways without delay. It asked departments to submit detailed reports on the steps taken and the current situation.

The bench made it clear that safety on highways must remain a top priority. It said coordination between NHAI and state authorities was essential to stop accidents caused by stray animals.
