Sons abandon elderly mother on roadside in Mahabubabad after care dispute

Hyderabad: Three sons who had agreed to share caregiving responsibilities for their ageing mother ended up abandoning her on the roadside in Bhupathipet village, Gudur mandal, Mahabubabad district.

The woman, identified as Boddu Bhadramma (75) of Vengampet, has six children. Her husband, Muthayya, died two decades ago. Following her sons’ marriages, she divided her farmland 30 guntas each mong them. Her eldest son, Venkanna, died ten years ago. Bhadramma, despite her age, had been working as a labourer.

As her health declined, the surviving sons Sudhakar, Ramesh, and Yakaswamy took turns supporting her. But during her stay with eldest daughter-in-law Anasurya, the latter refused to care for her, citing financial issues. Subsequently, Yakaswamy dropped his mother near the Raithu Vedika centre in Bhupatipet and left for his village.

Local police intervened after learning of the incident. In the presence of villagers, they summoned the three sons and their wives for counselling. Following the session, daughters-in-law Sulochana, Upendra, and Nagalakshmi took Bhadramma in an auto and dropped her back at Anasurya’s home.
