Singur project repair works to begin; reservoir water not to be fully released at once

Hyderabad: The Engineer-in-Chief (General) of the Irrigation & CAD Department, Amjad Hussain, assured residents that the Singur project in Pulkal Mandal, Sangareddy district, will not be drained all at once during the upcoming repair works. He stressed that the department will protect drinking-water supplies while maintaining optimal storage levels.

A technical team from the Water Resources Department inspected the project site last Saturday to identify areas needing repair. Hussain explained that upstream embankments urgently need reinforcement. Therefore, the department plans to release water in phases, ensuring ongoing access to water. Officials will soon submit a detailed plan for alternate water supply to the government.

800-metre stretch to be reinforced in phases

The inspection revealed that 800 metres of embankment need repairs. The department will launch the work within 15 days and aims to complete it in a single irrigation season. If necessary, they will extend the work into the following season. These upgrades, once complete, are expected to secure the project for another 50 years. Officials also ruled out the possibility of constructing a cofferdam, stating it is not technically viable.

Authorities say drinking water supply will remain stable

The Singur project supplies water to nearly 1,800 villages in Sangareddy, Medak, Kamareddy, and Nizamabad districts through the Mission Bhagiratha scheme. Although the reservoir holds 3 TMC of water at present, experts confirmed this is enough to meet drinking water needs until summer. Additionally, the Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply & Sewerage Board (HMWSSB) stated that Hyderabad’s water supply remains safe as long as the reservoir retains at least 7 TMC.

To avoid panic, officials reiterated that all repairs will proceed in a controlled, staged manner. They emphasised that the public can expect full transparency and consistent service throughout the project timeline.
