Hyderabad: Shalibanda police registered an extortion case against Mohammed Bilal, a self-styled YouTube reporter, for allegedly demanding money by threatening arrest.
According to the complaint, the accused demanded ₹35,000 from a party. He claimed he could manage their case at the police station. In return, he assured them that police would not arrest them if they paid the amount.
The complainant told police that the accused threatened arrest if they refused to pay. Investigators said he intimidated the complainant on several occasions using the same threat.
Shalibanda extortion case draws police warning
Based on available evidence, Shalibanda police arrested Mohammed Bilal. Thereafter, police continued the investigation into the Shalibanda extortion case.
DCP South Zone Sri Kiran Khare, IPS, said police noticed some individuals falsely project themselves as reporters or media persons. He added that such people indulge in illegal acts like case settlement, extortion, and collection of mamool.
The DCP said police will not tolerate such acts under any circumstances. He warned that police will take strict legal action against those involved.
He appealed to the public to report threats or extortion in the name of media or influence. Further, he assured prompt police action and protection to informants.
