Seethakka says special women SHGs being formed across Telangana

Hyderabad: Telangana Panchayat Raj, Women and Child Welfare Minister Danasari Anasuya Seethakka on Monday told the Assembly that the state government is forming special women Self-Help Groups (SHGs) for adolescent girls, senior citizens, and persons with disabilities.

Replying to questions on the Indira Mahila Shakti canteen scheme, the Minister said the government is prioritising women’s empowerment and welfare. She added that the Indira Mahila Shakti programme is driving economic self-reliance among women across the state.

According to Seethakka, the government aims to make every woman an SHG member. Therefore, officials are enrolling women from the age of 15 to old age. In addition, the government has created separate SHGs to meet the needs of adolescent girls, elderly women, and the differently abled.

Meanwhile, Seethakka said the government planned to distribute Indiraamma sarees to all women in the state. However, delays in production temporarily halted distribution in urban areas, she explained.

She said the government is extending support to SHGs willing to operate canteens, milk booths, and grocery shops. Moreover, the government is encouraging such units in high-footfall locations such as hospitals, colleges, and temples by providing financial and logistical assistance.

Seethakka also said the government launched free bus travel for women within 48 hours of assuming office. As a result, the initiative has improved mobility and access to education and employment opportunities for women.

Further, the Minister said the government will promote women-run canteens and shops at Yadagirigutta, a major pilgrimage centre. She added that district collectors will submit proposals for implementing these initiatives.

Finally, Seethakka urged women across Telangana to join SHGs. She said collective participation will strengthen women economically and socially.
