Revanth Reddy Pays Tribute to Rajiv Gandhi, Takes Swipe at Centre Over Foreign Interference

Hyderabad: Telangana Chief Minister Revanth Reddy on Tuesday paid tribute to former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi, describing him as a visionary leader who elevated India’s standing on the global stage through economic reforms and progressive policies.

Speaking after garlanding Rajiv Gandhi’s statue at the Secretariat on the occasion of his death anniversary, Revanth said it was under Gandhi’s leadership that India embraced liberalisation, setting the foundation for a stronger, more modern nation. He also credited the former PM with empowering the youth by lowering the voting age to 18.

Reflecting on India’s leadership legacy, the Chief Minister also referenced former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, recalling how she responded decisively to external threats. “When Indian civilians were attacked, Indira Gandhi made it clear that India would defend itself without needing a third-party mediator,” he said.

Taking a sharp dig at the current Central government, Revanth remarked, “Today, we see a situation where India agrees to ceasefire only after intervention from Donald Trump.” He criticised BJP leaders for targeting Rahul Gandhi to mask their own shortcomings.

Revanth also took aim at Union Minister G. Kishan Reddy, accusing him of being absent when public support was needed during times of national concern, while Congress leaders, he said, were actively on the ground. “It is ironic that the same person now questions Rahul Gandhi,” he added.

He defended the installation of Rajiv Gandhi’s statue near the Secretariat, dismissing criticism from certain quarters as narrow-minded. “The Gandhi family and the Congress party have a legacy of sacrifice for this nation,” Revanth asserted.

He concluded by reaffirming the state’s commitment to national security. “The integrity and defence of India remain our highest priority. We will fulfil our responsibilities with seriousness, not political gamesmanship,” he said.
