Hyderabad: Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy on Tuesday hosted a breakfast meeting for Congress MPs from the state in New Delhi, ahead of voting in the vice-presidential election. He briefed them on the strategy before they cast their votes, the Chief Minister’s Office said.
Reddy arrived in the national capital on Monday night to mobilise support for INDIA bloc nominee B. Sudershan Reddy, a former Supreme Court judge from Telangana.
Revanth Reddy seeks wider backing for Sudershan Reddy
Taking personal interest in the contest, the Chief Minister was reportedly reaching out to MPs from non-INDIA bloc parties for last-minute support. He is credited with playing a crucial role in Sudershan Reddy’s candidature, highlighting his work as chair of the Independent Expert Working Group that analysed Telangana’s caste survey data. The panel submitted its report in July to the Chief Minister.
Sudershan Reddy also joined Revanth Reddy during the presentation on the caste survey made last month before Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi and Mallikarjun Kharge.
Appeal for Telugu unity finds no takers
The Chief Minister invoked the slogan of Telugu self-respect coined by TDP founder N.T. Rama Rao and recalled bipartisan support once extended to Neelam Sanjiva Reddy, P.V. Narasimha Rao, and M. Venkaiah Naidu. He appealed to parties from both Telugu states to rally behind Sudershan Reddy as a Telugu candidate.
However, his appeal found no takers. The BRS, with four Rajya Sabha MPs, announced it would abstain. TDP and Jana Sena, partners of the BJP-led NDA, have aligned with the ruling bloc, while the YSR Congress Party also pledged support to NDA nominee C.P. Radhakrishnan.
Congress currently has eight Lok Sabha and three Rajya Sabha members from Telangana, but no parliamentary representation from Andhra Pradesh.
