CM Revanth Reddy, Bhatti Vikramarka head to Delhi over BC quota, Telangana local polls

Hyderabad: Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy and Deputy Chief Minister Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka flew to New Delhi on Monday to consult senior legal experts about the upcoming local body elections in Telangana. They are focusing on how to overcome hurdles related to Backward Classes (BC) reservations and other constitutional challenges.

The Telangana High Court has directed the state to complete the election process by September 30. This has added urgency to the government’s legal review. Sources confirmed that the Chief Minister and his deputy are meeting top Supreme Court lawyers to prepare their legal position ahead of the court’s deadline.

Local body polls BC quota tangled in legal delays and political challenges

At the center of the dispute is the government’s proposal to reserve 42 percent of local body seats for BCs. Although the Telangana Assembly passed a bill to this effect, the President of India has not yet approved it. Meanwhile, an ordinance linked to the reservation plan still awaits the Governor’s assent.

These delays have created uncertainty. Legal advisors have warned that holding elections without resolving the quota issue may invite fresh litigation.

In addition, Revanth is expected to discuss another sensitive matter how to deal with MLAs who switched parties. The defection issue has already stirred political tensions within the state.

After wrapping up legal consultations, both Revanth and Bhatti plan to travel to Bihar on August 27. They will join Congress leader Rahul Gandhi’s padayatra. Several Telangana ministers are also expected to participate in the event.

With the High Court’s deadline fast approaching, the next few weeks will be critical for the state’s election strategy.
