Ramzan Fruits Business in Hyderabad experiences a significant rise in demand during the holy month as people prepare for Iftar with a variety of fresh fruits. Fruits such as dates, watermelon, apples, bananas, and seasonal produce are considered essential for breaking the fast. Throughout the month, fruit markets in Hyderabad witness a surge in sales, reflecting the strong cultural and religious significance of fruits during Ramzan.

Why Does the Demand for Fruits Rise During Ramzan?

The demand for fruits increases dramatically during Ramzan as people prefer light and nutritious food to break their fast after an entire day of fasting. Mohammad Qadeer, a fruit seller from Santosh Nagar Chowk, explained that fruits are rich in natural sweetness, vitamins, and minerals, making them an ideal choice for Iftar. He emphasized that fruits provide instant energy, which is highly needed after fasting. They are also easy to digest, making them suitable for an empty stomach. Dates, in particular, hold religious significance, as breaking the fast with dates is a widely practiced Sunnah. This tradition leads to an increased demand for dates during Ramzan and grabs a major share in Ramzan fruits business.

Availability of Fruits in Hyderabad During Ramzan

Hyderabad, known for its culinary diversity, also stands out for its fruit availability during Ramzan. Major fruit markets, including Charminar, Afzal Gunj, Moazzam Jahi Market, Madannapet, and Santosh Nagar, become hubs for fruit sales. Mohammad Mukhtar, a fruit vendor from Vivekananda, Kukatpally, shared that during Ramzan, fruit sales rise by 50 to 90 percent compared to regular days.

While the Old City of Hyderabad is particularly vibrant during Ramzan, the demand for fruits also spikes in areas of New Hyderabad with significant Muslim populations. Mukhtar noted that as Ramzan falls during the summer this year, customers are more inclined to buy seasonal fruits that help keep the body hydrated. Watermelon, grapes, mangoes, sapota (chikoo), and bananas are among the top choices for Iftar.

Increase in Fruit Prices During Ramzan

A noticeable rise in fruit prices occurs during Ramzan. According to fruit traders, fruit sales triple compared to regular days due to the high demand. Mohammed Moiz, the proprietor of Zam Zam Fruit Merchant at Afzal Gunj, stated that the demand for fruits such as watermelon and grapes peaks during the holy month, particularly in hot weather. This heightened demand inevitably leads to an increase in prices.

Despite the price hike, Moiz reassured that there are no supply shortages in the market. However, he noted that fruits cannot be stored for long periods due to the risk of spoilage, making frequent restocking essential.

One of Hyderabad’s well-known fruit markets, Moazzam Jahi Market, is home to several fruit vendors. Among them is M.M. Fruits, owned by Mohammed Owais. He provided insights into the most popular fruits sold and Ramzan fruits business during Ramzan.

  • Mangoes: Demand for mangoes peaks during the final days of Ramzan.

Mohammed Owais also revealed that fruits are sourced from other states and even imported from foreign countries to meet the rising demand during Ramzan. Exotic fruits like dragon fruit and imported apples are particularly sought after. Meanwhile, Telangana’s local produce, including bananas, watermelon, muskmelon, grapes, sapota, figs, papaya, and jamun, remains highly popular and hugely contributes to Ramzan fruits business.

A unique trend observed during Ramzan is that small-scale vendors and even vegetable sellers start selling fruits due to the high demand, earning significant profits within the month.
