Racist killing of Tripura MBA student in Dehradun shocks nation: KTR

Hyderabad: The brutal killing of Tripura-based MBA student Angel Chakma in Dehradun reflected a dangerous rise in hatred and racism, BRS working president Kalvakuntla Taraka Rama Rao said on Wednesday.

Reacting on social media, KTR said the incident clearly showed how society was normalising racial hatred. He further described racism as a contagious disease afflicting civilised communities. Therefore, he warned that selective hatred posed a serious threat to the nation’s future.

Angel Chakma, a native of Tripura, stayed in Dehradun with his brother Michael. During their stay, a group of men allegedly hurled racist slurs at them. Moreover, the attackers questioned their identity and told them they were “not Indians.”

When the brothers protested, the attackers assaulted them with knives and iron rods. Just before the assault, Angel reportedly asked what proof they still needed to show their nationality.

As a result of the attack, Angel suffered critical injuries. He then fought for life for nearly 16 days before he died in hospital. Notably, Angel was the son of a Border Security Force jawan, which deepened public anger.

Racist killing exposes growing intolerance, says KTR

Condemning the incident, KTR said India’s principle of unity in diversity could not survive such hatred. He added that racism in any form directly threatened social harmony.

KTR demanded strict punishment for those responsible and insisted that authorities deliver justice without compromise. At the same time, he urged the Centre to move beyond routine condemnations and bring in strong laws to curb racist abuse and violence.

He said such incidents did not occur in isolation. Instead, they showed how society was beginning to normalise hatred. If ignored, he warned, this trend would weaken India’s democratic fabric.

Meanwhile, police arrested five accused and continued the search for the prime suspect. Across the country, several national leaders condemned the killing, while protests broke out demanding justice.
