Hyderabad: President Murmu Constitution Day address on Wednesday emphasised that India’s Constitution was drafted to secure the personal and democratic rights of every citizen. She delivered the message at Samvidhan Sadan in Parliament, where the Vice President C.P. Radhakrishnan, the Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, the Prime Minister and senior leaders from both Houses were present. Moreover, she said the Constitution continues to guide the nation through changing times.
She recalled November 26, 1949, as a defining moment when the Constituent Assembly completed the drafting process. According to her, the Constitution represented a collective commitment to democratic values. Dr B.R. Ambedkar, she noted, played a decisive role as chairman of the Drafting Committee.
President Murmu Constitution Day remarks underline national progress
The President said the framers ensured that freedoms remained protected while democracy deepened across the country. She pointed out that lifting 25 crore people out of poverty stands as a major achievement. Furthermore, she said women, youth, Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes, farmers and the middle class continue to strengthen democratic institutions.
She highlighted several reforms that shaped recent progress. The ban on triple talaq, she said, addressed a longstanding social concern. In addition, the Goods and Services Tax encouraged economic integration. She added that the repeal of Article 370 removed a barrier to political integration. The Nari Shakti Bandhan Act, she said, will now open a new phase for women-focused growth.
The President also noted that a nationwide commemoration began this month to mark 150 years of Vande Mataram. During the ceremony, she released digital versions of the Constitution in nine languages, including Telugu, Malayalam, Marathi and Odia. All attendees joined her in reading the Preamble to reaffirm their commitment to justice, liberty, equality and fraternity.
She said Constitution Day marks the adoption of the document by the Constituent Assembly in 1949. Finally, she added that the annual observance, declared in 2015, honours the values that continue to shape India’s democratic path.
