Hyderabad: Power sector employees will not hesitate to launch a nationwide strike if the Centre pushes ahead with privatisation, warned Sudip Dutta, convener of the National Coordination Committee of Electricity Employees and Engineers (NCCOEEE), on Thursday.
Speaking at a meeting of employees’ unions from both Telugu states at Sundarayya Vignana Kendram in Hyderabad, Dutta alleged the central government was preparing to privatise the sector in Uttar Pradesh first. He appealed to staff to support the indefinite agitation already underway there.
Mohan Sharma, national general secretary of the All India Power Employees Federation, expressed concern that privatisation would turn electricity into a costly commodity. He urged employees to ensure the success of the nationwide general strike called for July 9.
Ashok Rao, national patron of the All India Power Engineers Federation, along with Saibaba and Krishnayya, chairmen of electricity employees’ joint action committees in Telangana and Andhra Pradesh, respectively, also took part in the discussions.
