Hyderabad: A pedestrian was killed and a sub-inspector injured in two successive accidents on the Balanagar flyover in the early hours of Monday, according to Balanagar police.
The first incident occurred around 3.06 am when an unidentified man attempting to cross the road near the flyover ramp was struck by a car. Locals detained the driver and alerted the police.
Sub-inspector Venkatesham, on night duty, arrived with a patrol team and ambulance. Around 3.40 am, while the team was shifting the body into the ambulance, a DCM tipper lorry crashed into the vehicle. The SI, who was standing near the ambulance, suffered a fractured left leg. He was taken to a private hospital for treatment.
Investigating officer Mohd Haji said the lorry driver, identified as Sannigonda, appeared to have briefly fallen asleep at the wheel, leading to the collision. Others at the scene moved away as the vehicle approached, but the SI reacted a moment too late.
The deceased man remains unidentified. His body has been shifted to the Gandhi Hospital mortuary. The car driver involved in the first accident has been identified as Syed Mazhar Ali.
Both drivers, Ali and Sannigonda, are in police custody. Alcohol tests conducted on them returned negative. Police registered a case under Section 106 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) for the fatal pedestrian accident and under Section 125 for the collision involving the SI.
Further investigation is underway.
