Telangana sanctions Rs 1,108.27 crore for Omkareshwara temple complex

Hyderabad: The Telangana government has granted administrative sanction for a large Omkareshwara temple complex at Manchirevula village in Gandipet mandal, along with a connecting six-lane road. The project, part of the Musi Rejuvenation Project, carries an estimated cost of Rs 1,108.27 crore.

Musi Riverfront Development Corporation Limited (MRDCL) Managing Director E V Narasimha Reddy had earlier proposed the works to the government as part of efforts to develop cultural and spiritual tourism and public infrastructure along the Musi river. The government examined the proposals and granted the approvals.

Sri Omkareshwara Swamy Temple at Manchirevula will be developed as the main temple, with Rs 948.65 crore to be spent on the complex. Sub-temples will be built for Sri Veerabhadra-Bhadrakali, Sri Lalitha Maha Tripura Sundari Devi, Sri Bala Ganapathi Swamy and Sri Bala Subrahmanya Swamy.

The complex will also have a Maha Mandapam, Nandi Mandapam, prakarams, rajagopurams, a yagashala, a pushkarini and a large Shiva statue, among other religious facilities. Of the Rs 948.65 crore, Rs 598.98 crore is earmarked for architectural works. Another Rs 349.67 crore will go towards civil and structural works and ancillary facilities.

To link the temple complex with the Musi Riverfront road network, a six-lane HMDA Master Plan road will be built at Manchirevula from Istana Villas to Kirti Westwind Villas. It will be 30 metres (100 feet) wide and will also connect the nearby Greyhounds lands and the Young India Police School to the riverfront road network. The 2.50 km road is estimated to cost Rs 159.62 crore.

Technical committee formed for temple works

The state government issued orders on Wednesday constituting a special technical committee for the development of the Sri Omkareshwara Swamy Temple complex. The committee will examine designs, drawings, detailed project reports (DPRs) and estimates, and provide technical guidance.

The Engineer-in-Chief (ENC) of the Roads and Buildings Department will chair the committee. The ENC of the Public Health and Municipal Engineering Department will be co-chairman, and the MRDCL Chief Engineer will be convener. Its members will be the Endowments Department Chief Engineer, sthapati and temple architecture expert Dr E Sivanagi Reddy, and the Additional Secretary of the Finance Department.

The committee’s main responsibility is to give technical guidance and approvals for the complex’s designs, drawings, DPRs and estimates. It will also finalise rates for special temple construction works, stone sculptures, sculptural works and other ancillary special works that fall outside the regular SSR. It will review the tendering and execution of the works. Where needed, it will examine changes in work quantities, additional works, scope changes and deviations, and take appropriate technical decisions.
