North India heavy rains trigger landslides, floods, and school closures

Hyderabad: North India’s heavy rains created chaos across several states. In Uttarakhand, a landslide hit the Haridwar–Rishikesh railway route near the Kali temple. Boulders fell on the iron structure built along the track. The structure was damaged, debris blocked the line, and many trains were halted.

In Rajasthan, heavy downpour led to floods. Rivers and streams overflowed, forcing the closure of schools in eight districts, including Udaipur, Jalore, Sirohi, and Barmer.

Punjab also faced widespread flooding. Nearly 2,000 villages in 23 districts were affected. The population hit was close to 3.8 lakh, with 46 deaths reported in 12 districts. Schools and colleges reopened only after 12 days.

In Uttar Pradesh, water released from the Hathni Kund barrage worsened conditions in Vrindavan. Water entered the Radha Vallabh temple, while floodwaters reached within 100 metres of the Banke Bihari temple.

Himachal Pradesh remained paralysed with 824 roads shut, including two national highways. The state received 45% above-normal rainfall this season.
