No urea shortage in Telangana, says Agriculture Minister Tummala

Hyderabad: Agriculture Minister Tummala Nageswara Rao on Tuesday told the Telangana Assembly there is no urea shortage in Telangana. He assured that the state holds ample fertilizer stocks and maintains close oversight on distribution.

Responding to queries raised by MLAs Madan Mohan Rao and Palvai Harish during Question Hour, Tummala acknowledged logistical issues during the last Kharif season. These were caused by delayed central imports and a temporary shutdown at Ramagundam Fertilizers and Chemicals Limited (RFCL). However, he said the state ensured smooth supply through continuous coordination with the Centre. They ultimately secured 9.79 lakh metric tonnes of urea—13,000 metric tonnes more than the previous season.

Urea sales hit record during current Rabi season

The Minister noted that Rabi urea sales, which had never crossed 3 lakh metric tonnes by December 31 in previous years, reached 3.93 lakh metric tonnes this season. Total sales are now at 4.52 lakh metric tonnes.

As of January 5, 2026, Telangana holds 1.67 lakh MT of urea, 51,458 MT of DAP, 2.67 lakh MT of complex fertilizers, 22,367 MT of SSP, and 30,880 MT of other fertilizers.

Fertilizer app pilot sees success

To boost transparency, the government has introduced a fertilizer mobile app in five districts. So far, 1.59 lakh farmers have used it to buy 4.55 lakh bags of urea. Both farmers and dealers have reportedly welcomed the system. The app will be rolled out statewide after the pilot phase.

Tummala dismissed reports of fertilizer scarcity as “false propaganda.” He said isolated incidents were being exaggerated. He added that systems like e-PoS and the Fertilizer Inventory Verification System (FIVEs) enable real-time tracking. Strict action is taken against hoarding and overpricing.

A live dashboard already provides inventory details to district collectors and will soon be made accessible to MLAs. The Minister reaffirmed the government’s commitment to ensuring uninterrupted fertilizer access for farmers.
