Union Minister Nitin Gadkari responded to Telangana Transport Minister Ponnam Prabhakar’s letter, outlining eligibility for new driving and testing centres in the state.
HYDERABAD: Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari has responded to Telangana Transport Minister Ponnam Prabhakar’s letter regarding key concerns in the state’s transport sector. His reply addressed proposals related to the Institute of Driving and Traffic Research (IDTR), Regional Driving Training and Certification Centres (RDTCs), and Driving Testing Stations (DTS).
Gadkari explained that, under current norms, one IDTR is allocated for every 2.5 crore people. Telangana already has an operational IDTR in Karimnagar. However, the state is eligible for three RDTCs and one DTS. He advised the Telangana government to submit formal proposals to establish these centres.
Additionally, Gadkari clarified that states have the authority to set up new automatic testing stations independently. The central government provides a 30% grant for these testing facilities, encouraging Telangana to take advantage of this support to enhance its transport infrastructure.
The response outlines the Centre’s framework for driving and testing facilities while allowing state governments to propose new centres within the specified guidelines. Telangana is expected to move forward with its plans based on the eligibility criteria and available financial assistance.
