NHRC registers case over arrest of NTV editor Donthu Ramesh

Hyderabad: The arrest of three NTV journalists over a report on a woman IAS officer continued to trigger outrage across Telangana on Friday.

Meanwhile, a key development emerged in the case as the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) registered a complaint linked to the arrest of NTV Input Editor Donthu Ramesh. Senior human rights lawyer Rama Rao Immaneni filed the complaint, alleging illegal arrest and harassment. Consequently, the NHRC registered a case under alleged rights violations involving media professionals.

Earlier, SIT officials arrested Donthu Ramesh along with NTV reporters Paripoorna Chari and Sudheer. The arrests followed a case linked to a news report aired by the channel. However, Telangana Police maintained that the action related to coverage involving a woman IAS officer.

Donthu Ramesh rejects police version

Subsequently, Donthu Ramesh responded on X and rejected the police claim that he was attempting to flee abroad to evade questioning. Instead, he said police falsely linked him to an unrelated news story and arrested him without valid grounds.

Further, Ramesh stated that he was travelling to Switzerland with his wife via Bangkok. He said the trip combined coverage of Telangana-related events at the World Economic Forum summit in Davos with a personal vacation. Nevertheless, police arrested him at Shamshabad airport, he alleged.

Additionally, Ramesh claimed that police detained him for several hours under the pretext of questioning. He said officers asked several questions unrelated to the case. Therefore, he described the detention as illegal and unwarranted.

Meanwhile, the NTV editor thanked political parties, journalists, friends and supporters who stood by him. He noted that many extended support despite ideological differences. At the same time, he criticised what he described as intimidation of the media during a festive period.
