Municipal elections gather steam after Telangana govt letter to ECI

Hyderabad: Municipal polls gathered momentum after the Telangana government sent a formal letter to the Election Commission of India seeking conduct of the polls in February.

The decision followed the State Cabinet meeting held at Medaram on Sunday, January 18, 2026. The meeting took place in the presence of Sammakka–Saralamma. Soon after, the government communicated its decision to the ECI regarding the upcoming municipal polls.

Officials said the poll panel may announce the municipal polls schedule within the next three days. As a result, political activity has intensified across Telangana. The Cabinet also cleared proposals related to district reorganisation during the same meeting.

Municipal elections trigger early political activity

Ahead of the municipal polls, the government has already finalised reservations for mayor and chairperson posts. These apply to 116 municipalities and seven municipal corporations across the State.

Following this move, election-related activity picked up in urban areas. Aspirants stepped up efforts to secure party tickets. Lobbying around senior leaders also increased.

Several municipalities have completed their term. The ruling Congress has begun moves to retain control. Meanwhile, opposition parties BRS and BJP have sharpened strategies to regain ground. The expected announcement of the municipal polls schedule is likely to further heat up the political atmosphere.
