Modi govt shields farmers from global fertilizer price rise: Kishan Reddy

Hyderabad: Union Minister G. Kishan Reddy on Tuesday announced that the Modi government has approved a ₹37,952 crore fertilizer subsidy for the 2025–26 Rabi season. He said the move would protect farmers from steep global price hikes.

Speaking to the media, Reddy explained that the Union Cabinet, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, approved the Nutrient Based Subsidy (NBS) to support fertilizer producers. The subsidy will cover 28 types of NPKS complex fertilizers, including DAP, MAP, MOP, TSP, SSP, PDM, and AS.

Fertilizer subsidy for farmers shields against global price hikes

Reddy pointed out that international prices for fertilizers have surged due to global disruptions. However, he said the Centre continues to bear the cost burden to ensure that farmers are not affected. “Even during the pandemic, a 50 kg bag of DAP was sold at ₹1,350. That commitment hasn’t changed,” he added.

Between March and July 2025, input costs rose by nearly 25 percent. The government responded by releasing subsidies in phases, helping maintain supply and avoid price shocks for both companies and farmers.

For the 2025 Kharif season, Telangana received 10.28 lakh metric tons of Urea, exceeding the demand of 9.8 lakh metric tons. Of this, 9.79 lakh metric tons have already been sold—surpassing last year’s usage.

Reddy also confirmed that the Ramagundam Fertilizer and Chemicals Limited (RFCL) plant has resumed operations. The unit temporarily shut down due to a gas leak. “The plant is now running at 90 percent capacity and producing 3,500 metric tons daily. Forty-five percent of this output is allocated to Telangana farmers,” he said.

He thanked the workers and teams who helped restart production and said the revival ensures a stable Urea supply for the state.
