Modi government labour codes hailed as major reform by Bandaru Dattatreya

Hyderabad: Former Governor Bandaru Dattatreya said the Modi government’s labour codes marked one of India’s major labour reforms. He noted that the Centre merged 29 labour laws into four codes to improve transparency, efficiency and worker welfare. He issued these comments in a statement released on Sunday.

Moreover, Dattatreya said the new framework offered social security to unorganised workers, gig workers and platform workers. He added that the rules brought clarity to wage systems and ensured timely adjustments. As a result, living standards improved across several sectors. He also highlighted new protections for women and said the codes aimed to create safer offices and dignified work conditions.

Furthermore, he said simplified procedures would support industry, attract investment and increase jobs. Because of these reforms, he added, occupational safety and health norms grew stronger under the Modi government’s labour codes.

Dattatreya also recalled that he drafted the early outline for these reforms in 2017 while serving as Union Minister of Labour and Employment. Prime Minister Narendra Modi guided that effort and assigned him key responsibilities. Consequently, Dattatreya said taking part in the process remained one of the greatest honours of his life.

He urged authorities to ensure that the codes lead to real gains for workers. For that reason, he suggested a strong enforcement system to monitor implementation. He said the reforms must be viewed through social and economic priorities rather than politics. Ultimately, he added, the laws would guide future generations and support national development.
