KTR slams Congress for BC caste census misuse in Telangana

Hyderabad: BRS working president K. T. Rama Rao accused Congress MP Rahul Gandhi of enabling the Telangana government to cut BC reservations after promoting the BC caste census as a major reform. In a post on X, he said the state spent nearly Rs 160 crore on the exercise yet approved only 17 per cent reservation for BCs in local body polls. Earlier, the quota stood at 24 per cent, and the Congress had promised 42 per cent during its campaign.

Rao argued that the decision weakened representation for backward communities in grassroots democratic bodies. He added that the reversal contradicted the narrative built around the BC caste census. Consequently, he said the ruling party had “stabbed the poor in the back” by reducing BC reservation after showcasing the enumeration. He questioned the logic of spending public funds before lowering the quota. Therefore, he demanded a direct response from Rahul Gandhi.

Rama Rao described the rollback as an injustice to backward groups. He noted that the public funds used for the process did not strengthen political space for BCs. Furthermore, he said the gap between campaign pledges and policy decisions damaged trust in the government. The reduction, he added, diluted democratic representation and undermined the commitment made to backward communities.
