Hyderabad: Union Minister for Coal and Mines G. Kishan Reddy on Saturday directed Singareni Collieries Company Limited (SCCL) to reduce coal prices. He also urged them to improve quality and pursue new coal blocks to ensure the company’s long-term growth.
Chairing a high-level review meeting at Singareni Bhavan in Hyderabad, Kishan Reddy said the Centre is preparing key reforms in the coal sector. He stressed that public sector firms like SCCL must operate with full commitment. This is essential to survive and thrive in a changing market.
Focus on coal quality, labour welfare and expansion
The Minister called for strict enforcement of new labour laws, introduced with worker welfare in mind. He emphasised that SCCL must balance reforms with employee interests, without compromising on safety or benefits.
Kishan Reddy also advised the company to utilise its workforce effectively. It should develop a clear plan to acquire new coal blocks. Furthermore, it should set up washeries—including dry washeries to enhance coal quality.
He instructed SCCL officials to draft a comprehensive future roadmap. This should align with the Centre’s policy goals while ensuring sustainable growth.
SCCL Chairman and Managing Director N. Balaram presented the firm’s current financial performance and strategic plans. Senior officials from the Union Ministry of Coal and Telangana’s Energy Department also attended the review.
