Hyderabad: Countering opposition criticism over paddy procurement, Congress MP from Bhongir, Kiran Kumar Reddy, has defended the Telangana government’s efforts, pointing to record figures that showcase the administration’s commitment to farmers. He dismissed the allegations made by the opposition BRS as baseless and politically motivated.
Speaking to reporters, Reddy cited official data indicating that, as of 7 June, the government had procured a remarkable 72 lakh metric tonnes of paddy through 8,378 procurement centres across the state a significant milestone, according to him, that reflects the government’s proactive approach.
He took aim at the BRS for what he termed “unnecessary charges” aimed at undermining the hard work done by the state in supporting the farming community. In a post on X, Reddy highlighted the leadership of Chief Minister Revanth Reddy and Civil Supplies Minister Uttam Kumar Reddy, crediting them with ensuring the smooth and efficient operation of the procurement process.
Drawing a pointed comparison with the previous administration, Reddy noted that during the BRS government’s tenure, only 7,034 centres managed to procure 59 lakh metric tonnes of paddy. He also pointed out that in 2022-23, merely ₹5,932 crore was paid to 9.81 lakh farmers, whereas the current administration has disbursed ₹15,121 crore to 12.33 lakh farmers by 8 June 2025.
He concluded by reiterating that the state’s focus is firmly on safeguarding farmers’ interests, and that no baseless allegations will derail its commitment to agricultural progress.
