Hyderabad: BRS MLC and Telangana Jagruthi president K. Kavitha has threatened a state-wide “Rail Roko” protest on July 17 if the Centre does not approve the Telangana Assembly’s bill granting 42% reservations to Backward Classes (BCs).
Speaking at a press conference at the Constitution Club in New Delhi, Kavitha warned that no train would be allowed to operate from Deccan to Delhi if the Centre failed to act. “This is just a trailer. If the bill isn’t cleared, we will move to an indefinite agitation,” she said, claiming the BJP will face backlash from Telangana’s 2.5 crore BCs.
She accused both BJP and Congress of betraying BC interests. Kavitha demanded that the Telangana government immediately issue a Government Order under Article 243(D) to implement enhanced quotas in local bodies as an interim measure.
Targeting Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, she asked why he hasn’t advised CM Revanth Reddy to issue the GO, despite his repeated use of the Constitution in public rallies. She also mocked Revanth Reddy’s frequent visits to Delhi, saying he had already scored a “half-century” of trips.
Kavitha called on Prime Minister Narendra Modi who identifies as OBC to ensure the BC bill is approved and included in the Ninth Schedule, similar to Tamil Nadu’s 69% quota law. She cited that 16 states have already breached the 50% reservation cap, especially after the EWS quota was introduced.
She questioned the accuracy of the recent caste census conducted under Congress rule, arguing that the 2014 family survey under KCR showed BCs constituted 52% of Telangana’s population, not the 46% now being claimed.
Kavitha plans to write to political parties nationwide seeking support for the BC reservation demand.
