Kavitha leads protest at Indira Park, slams Kaleshwaram probe as political vendetta

Hyderabad: Telangana Jagruthi president and MLC K. Kavitha on Wednesday spearheaded a massive protest at Indira Park, decrying the Congress government’s move to serve notices to former Chief Minister K. Chandrashekar Rao in connection with the Kaleshwaram project. Terming the probe a political witch-hunt, Kavitha said that by targeting KCR, the Congress had insulted the very soul of Telangana.

Addressing a crowd of supporters, Kavitha questioned the rationale behind the summons. “What crime has KCR committed? Is it a crime to bring water to Telangana’s fields? To build a state-of-the-art irrigation project that put Telangana at the forefront of development?” she asked, her voice rising with emotion.

She dismissed the Kaleshwaram Commission as a tool of political vendetta, branding it a “Congress Commission” rather than a neutral probe. Kavitha detailed the project’s scale: 21 pump houses, 15 reservoirs, 200 km of tunnels, and 1,500 km of canals. “With the earth excavated from Kaleshwaram, you could build 300 pyramids. With the steel used, 100 Eiffel Towers. With the concrete, 50 Burj Khalifas,” she said, underlining the project’s enormity.

She claimed the project delivers water to 40 lakh acres and provides a permanent supply of 40 TMC to Hyderabad and 16 TMC to industries. “Only a leader with a lion’s heart could envision such a project,” she said, ridiculing Congress leaders for lacking the courage to dream at that scale.

Kavitha accused the Congress of conspiring to defame KCR and sabotage a lifeline project for Telangana. She also challenged them to summon Megha Krishna Reddy, whose firm executed 90% of the pump house work, alleging that the same contractor was favoured under the previous Congress regime too. “Why is Revanth Reddy scared to summon him?” she asked.

The MLC slammed the Congress for prioritising commissions and contractors over people. She demanded an answer from the government on why it had let off the main contractor and questioned the silence of BJP leaders, particularly Etela Rajender. “You have the duty to stop the Banakacharla project and to secure national status for Kaleshwaram. Why are you mute?” she asked.

She also took aim at Andhra Pradesh’s Godavari-Penna linking project, accusing the Telangana government of failing to resist water diversion. “If you won’t let us protest in Hyderabad, we’ll take our dharna to every district and street,” she warned, criticising the arrest of Telangana Jagruthi workers en route to Mancherial and Ramagundam.

Declaring that Telangana Jagruthi would continue its agitation until the state secured its rightful share of 1,000 TMC from the Godavari, Kavitha said the time had come to show Telangana’s pride and fight back.
