Kavitha demands return of five Telangana villages merged into Andhra over Polavaram

Hyderabad: BRS MLC Kalvakuntla Kavitha on Friday demanded that five villages transferred from Telangana to Andhra Pradesh due to the Polavaram project be reinstated to their original state.

Addressing a round table conference organised by Telangana Jagruthi on the issue, Kavitha named Purushothapatnam, Gundala, Ettapaka, Kannayagudem, and Pichukalapaka as the affected villages. She said residents in these areas continue to face hardship, and accused both state governments of neglecting the matter.

She urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to include the issue in the upcoming inter-state meeting scheduled for June 25, where the chief ministers of Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Odisha, and Chhattisgarh are expected to discuss the Pragati Agenda. Kavitha also called on Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy to pressure the Centre for resolution, warning that legal action would be considered if no steps are taken.

Kavitha said the Polavaram project’s spillway expansion to 50 lakh cusecs has created permanent flood risks, particularly threatening the Bhadrachalam temple area. She stressed the need to raise embankments to prevent future submergence.

She raised concerns about Lord Rama’s endowment lands in Purushothapatnam, now in Andhra territory, while the temple remains in Telangana. The land, she said, is unprotected and being encroached upon. She urged both governments to conduct a joint survey on the submergence impact.

Referring to past actions, Kavitha recalled Telangana Jagruthi approaching the Supreme Court to halt the Polavaram project during the united Andhra Pradesh period. She criticised the Central government’s 2014 ordinance passed during Prime Minister Modi’s first Cabinet meeting that facilitated the merger of seven mandals into Andhra Pradesh, calling it unconstitutional.

Kavitha also blamed then Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu for allegedly using political manoeuvres to gain control of the mandals and accused the Congress party of staying silent when the issue was raised in Parliament. She said BRS MPs opposed the ordinance, while Congress failed to act.
