Mother, daughter die after consuming pesticide-laced food in Kalwakurthy; son critical

Hyderabad: A tragic incident unfolded in Kalwakurthy town of Nagarkurnool district on Thursday, when a woman allegedly fed her two children food mixed with pesticide and then consumed it herself, leading to the death of the mother and daughter.

The incident occurred in Tilak Nagar locality, where Prasanna (40) lived with her daughter Meghana (13) and son Ashrith. Earlier in the day, the family reportedly celebrated the New Year by cutting a cake at home.

According to police, Prasanna later mixed pesticide into cooked rice and served it to her children before eating the same food herself. Prasanna and her daughter died, while the son’s condition remained critical.

Police shifted the bodies of the mother and daughter to a government hospital for post-mortem. Meanwhile, doctors admitted the boy to a private hospital, where he continued to receive intensive treatment.

Investigators said Prasanna had been under severe emotional distress following the death of her husband, Bheem Shetty Prakash, around 40 days ago. Unable to cope with the loss, she allegedly believed that ending their lives was preferable to continuing to live.

Kalwakurthy SI Madhava Reddy registered a case and began an investigation into the incident.
