Kaleshwaram scam wrecked Telangana’s economy, says TPCC spokesperson

Hyderabad: Telangana Pradesh Congress Committee (TPCC) official spokesperson Chanagani Dayakar launched a scathing attack on the previous BRS government, holding it responsible for massive corruption in the Kaleshwaram lift irrigation project and the financial downfall of the state.

Speaking to the media, Dayakar accused former Chief Minister K. Chandrashekar Rao of treating the Kaleshwaram project as a personal venture, assuming roles beyond his constitutional mandate. “KCR functioned not only as the Chief Minister but also as an engineer, and that’s where the problem began,” he said.

Dayakar said the Congress government has set up the PC Ghose Commission to investigate the alleged irregularities and demanded that KCR cooperate with the inquiry instead of criticising it. “Disparaging remarks by BRS leaders against the Commission are not acceptable. KCR must honour the process and prove his integrity,” he added.

He alleged that the Kaleshwaram project led to a scam worth ₹1 lakh crore, with the livelihood of thousands lost as a result. “BRS leaders and officials competed in corruption, looted resources, and burdened Telangana with insurmountable debt. Valuable lands were taken over, environmental norms flouted, and people were robbed,” he said.

Dayakar criticised BRS working president K.T. Rama Rao for diverting the conversation to other projects like SLBC while avoiding the core issue of Kaleshwaram. “SLBC was neglected by the BRS for a decade. It is now being revived with honest intent by the present Congress government,” he stated.

Labeling Kaleshwaram as a curse on the people of Telangana, he said the state has the right to know the truth and that the ongoing investigation is a step in that direction. “The Congress government is not pursuing political vendetta. Asking for accountability is not vengeance,” he remarked.

Referring to false allegations made about environmental damage in Gachibowli, he dismissed BRS’s criticism as baseless and reiterated that Congress does not indulge in such gutter politics.

He urged KCR to appear before the PC Ghose Commission and clear his name if he truly believes in his innocence.
