IPL 2025 to resume on May 17 with 13 league matches across 6 cities

Hyderabad: The IPL’s back on. After a week-long halt sparked by military tensions with Pakistan, BCCI has confirmed the league will resume from May 17. Thirteen matches are left in the league stage and will be played across six cities. Playoffs start May 29, final’s on June 3.

BCCI dropped the update on their official social media handles late Monday, ending speculation around the tournament’s fate. The league was put on pause on May 9, with the board stating the country was effectively at war and couldn’t continue hosting a cricket event under such circumstances.

First match after the break? Royal Challengers Bangalore take on Lucknow Super Giants in Bengaluru, May 17 evening. The rest of the league games will be split between Jaipur, Delhi, Lucknow, Mumbai and Ahmedabad. League phase wraps up May 27. Two double headers—on May 18 and May 25—cram the calendar further. All 13 league games will be squeezed into an 11-day window.

The Punjab vs Delhi clash originally set for May 8 in Dharamshala—cut short due to the cross-border attacks—has now been moved to Jaipur, rescheduled for May 24. Playoff venues are still undecided. Hyderabad and Kolkata were initially down to host two matches each, but that’s being re-evaluated.

Out of the total 74 matches planned for IPL 2025, 57 were completed before suspension. The 58th—Punjab vs Delhi—was stopped mid-game. So we’re left with 17 matches: 13 in league, 4 in playoffs.

Mumbai, Kolkata, Rajasthan, and Chennai each have two games remaining. The rest of the teams still have three to go. Each team plays 14 league games in total. Updated standings and qualification scenarios can be seen on the revised points table.

Three franchises are already out of the playoffs race—Sunrisers Hyderabad, Rajasthan Royals, and Chennai Super Kings. Seven others are still in with a chance.

When the league was halted, BCCI advised all overseas players and support staff to fly home. Many did. They’ll now be recalled, though there’s a catch. A few Australian cricketers are reportedly unwilling to return, choosing instead to prep for the World Test Championship final.
