India’s costliest car number attracts fierce bidding in weekly Haryana auction

According to officials, the Haryana Transport Department holds online auctions every week for VIP and fancy numbers. This week, HR 88 B 8888 drew most of the attention as widespread interest built around it. Moreover, 45 bidders joined the race, and the number quickly moved beyond the usual price range.

The bidding started at ₹50,000. However, it crossed ₹88 lakh by Wednesday afternoon, showing how intense the competition had become. The auction closed at 5 pm, and the number finally reached ₹1.17 crore, marking the highest price ever paid for a registration number in India.

Officials noted that HR 88 B 8888 carries a unique visual appeal. The letter “B” resembles the digit “8,” creating a sequence that appears as four eighths on the number plate. Because of this pattern, bidders viewed the plate as rare, symbolic and visually striking.

The number includes the Haryana state code “HR,” while “88” refers to a specific RTO office. The letter “B” represents the vehicle series code, and “8888” forms the special registration number that attracted this record-setting price.
