INCOIS rules out tsunami threat to India after Russia quake

Hyderabad: The Indian National Center for Ocean Information Services (INCOIS), based in Hyderabad, confirmed Wednesday that the 8.8-magnitude earthquake off Russia’s Kamchatka Peninsula does not pose a tsunami threat to India or the wider Indian Ocean region.

INCOIS issued the clarification after seismic activity triggered widespread tsunami advisories across the Pacific, including Japan, Alaska, Hawaii, and the US west coast. The earthquake occurred at 04:54 IST on July 30 (23:24 UTC, July 29) off the eastern coast of Kamchatka, with coordinates listed as 52.57°N, 160.08°E.

A social media alert from INCOIS stated: “No Tsunami threat to India in connection with this earthquake.” The agency, which functions as India’s tsunami early warning system, monitored the event and ruled out any risk to the Indian mainland or islands.

On July 29, a separate earthquake measuring between 6.3 and 6.5 magnitude struck the Bay of Bengal and Nicobar Islands. INCOIS also assessed that tremor and concluded there was no associated tsunami threat.
