Illegal sand mining continues in Adilabad despite floods

Hyderabad: Illegal sand mining in Adilabad district has continued unchecked, even as heavy rains flood streams and cut off roads across the region.

Locals in Rebbanapet mandal reported rampant mining near Pulikunta stream, where a sand mafia cartel is allegedly transporting loads without permits and raking in profits. The activity has persisted despite the rising floodwaters and worsening weather.

Residents expressed anger at the lack of enforcement and blamed local authorities for failing to crack down on the operation. “Even as the district reels from rain damage, trucks carry sand openly,” one villager said.

The Pulikunta stretch has become a hotspot for unlicensed sand transport, with no visible deterrence from officials. Locals fear the continued exploitation could damage the environment and worsen flood-related erosion.

They have called on district officials to act immediately and put an end to what they describe as a blatant criminal enterprise operating in broad daylight.
