HYDRAA expands Sunnam Cheruvu from 14.2 to 30.5 acres

Hyderabad: HYDRAA has expanded Sunnam Cheruvu from 14.20 acres to 30.5 acres by removing encroachments around the lake. The agency is also developing public amenities and improving the lake’s surroundings.

HYDRAA said the lake had earlier shrunk because of encroachments and sewage inflow. The agency stated that it did not remove any buildings or residences during the lake restoration work.

According to HYDRAA, a PCB report found toxic substances in tanker-supplied water in the area. The report mentioned mercury, lead, arsenic, fluoride and pesticides among the substances detected.

The agency said it installed temporary sheds to stop sewage from entering the lake. Workers also removed plastic waste that had accumulated to a height of about 3 metres.

The restoration has already attracted morning and evening walkers, according to HYDRAA. The agency said the remaining lake development works would finish within a few days.

HYDRAA is also preparing the site for an inauguration by Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy. The agency said it was making arrangements for double-bedroom houses for people living within the lake’s FTL limits.

Sunnam Cheruvu development includes temple and recreation facilities

HYDRAA is also developing the Anjaneya Swamy Temple located within the lake’s FTL limits. The agency said it held several meetings with temple committee representatives and considered their suggestions.

The planned temple works include a gopuram and a pathway leading to the temple. HYDRAA is also creating a circumambulation path and a marble gazebo for devotees.

A statue of Anjaneya will also be installed in a water fountain in front of the temple. Temple committee representatives welcomed the development and said the work considered devotees’ sentiments.

HYDRAA alleged that some people were attempting to obstruct the temple’s development by spreading claims that the agency would remove the temple. The temple committee representatives, however, have remained vigilant over the issue.

Around the lake, HYDRAA has developed a pathway along the wide bund. The agency is also installing stone seats and gazebos for visitors.

The project includes children’s play areas, green swings and open gyms. HYDRAA is planting medicinal, fragrant and shade-giving trees around the lake to increase greenery.

The agency said its environmental measures could help keep temperatures 2 to 3 degrees lower around the lake. It is also planning boating facilities and other tourist amenities.

Solar lights are being installed along the lake bund, while sturdy fencing is also being provided. HYDRAA is additionally developing the natural hill beside the lake as part of the wider improvement project.
