Hyderabad Police ban Chinese Manja, warn of criminal action during Sankranti

Hyderabad: Hyderabad Police Commissioner CV Sajjanar, IPS, has issued a strict ban on Chinese Manja, warning that violators will face criminal prosecution under the Environment Protection Act, 1986.

With the Sankranti festival approaching, the Commissioner said the synthetic thread poses a major threat to public safety, wildlife, and the environment. “Chinese Manja has caused fatal neck injuries to two-wheeler riders, serious finger wounds to children, and the deaths of birds and animals,” he said.

He stressed that the material is non-biodegradable and remains in the environment for years, causing long-term ecological harm. Additionally, he warned that the thread can lead to electrocution or fire when it touches power lines.

Strict enforcement and public cooperation urged

To crack down on violators, police will launch special drives and conduct surprise inspections across Hyderabad. Officers will book those who sell, store, transport, or use Chinese Manja under relevant legal provisions.

“Chinese Manja is a lethal material, not a festive toy,” Sajjanar said. “We will take criminal action without exception.”

He urged parents and guardians to allow children to use only traditional cotton thread for kite flying. He also asked families to avoid dangerous materials during celebrations.

The public can report illegal Manja sales by calling 100, messaging the police WhatsApp helpline at 94906 16555, or visiting the nearest police station. Police have assured that all informants’ identities will remain confidential.

The Commissioner appealed for safe and responsible celebrations. “Festivals should not endanger lives or harm nature,” he added.
