Hyderabad police arrest a chain-snatching suspect, recover gold worth Rs 3.5 lakh

Hyderabad: The Charminar Zone Task Force and Saidabad Police arrested a 34-year-old bike mechanic for allegedly snatching a gold chain from an elderly woman in Gaddiannaram. Police recovered a 17.160-gram gold chain and a Honda Shine motorcycle, together valued at approximately Rs 3.5 lakh.

The Hyderabad chain snatching arrest took place on November 1 at SBI Colony in Saidabad. Police identified the accused as Mohammed Ghouse Pasha, alias Ghouse, a resident of Balapur.

Officials said technical evidence helped investigators locate and apprehend the suspect. The alleged offence occurred on October 26 at Bank Colony, Gaddiannaram, within Saidabad police station limits.

Hyderabad chain snatching arrest followed betting-related debts

According to police, Ghouse Pasha had suffered heavy financial losses through cricket betting. He subsequently borrowed money from friends and relatives to meet his financial commitments.

However, his creditors began pressuring him to repay the borrowed amounts. Police said his earnings as a bike mechanic were insufficient to clear the debts. Consequently, he allegedly decided to commit chain snatching to obtain money.

On October 26, the accused took a customer’s Honda Shine motorcycle from his workplace. He then travelled through several localities, including Amberpet and Dabeerpura, searching for a potential target.

Later, he reached Gaddiannaram Road near Mallikarjuna Swamy Temple. There, he noticed an elderly woman wearing a gold chain. Investigators said Ghouse Pasha followed the elderly woman after spotting her near the temple.

He allegedly approached her under the pretext of delivering a message from a mixer repair shop owner. Police said he used the conversation to distract the woman before suddenly snatching her gold chain.

He then fled the location on the Honda Shine motorcycle. After the incident, the accused allegedly kept the stolen chain and the motorcycle at his bike repair shop.
