Hyderabad Metro Phase 2B pegged at ₹19,000 crore with new airport, Medchal lines

Hyderabad: Three new corridors. Nearly ₹19,000 crore on the table. Hyderabad Metro’s second phase (2B) has now reached the state government after clearing a key hurdle—approval from the Hyderabad Airport Metro Limited (HAML) board, chaired by the Chief Secretary.

Plans laid out in the Detailed Project Reports (DPRs) cover 86.5 km across three fresh routes: JBS–Medchal, JBS–Shamirpet, and Shamshabad Airport to Future City. Each of the three has its own standalone report.

JBS–Shamirpet will stretch 22 km via Karkhana, Alwal, Hakimpet, and Thumkunta. Because the Hakimpet Air Force runway sits too close to the main road and defence authorities objected to elevated pillars, a 1.5 km stretch has been pushed underground—Metro line to cut right under the runway.

JBS–Medchal line, 24.5 km long, will run through Tadbund, Bowenpally, Suchitra and Kompally. Earlier plans to stack metro tracks above roads with a double-deck structure were dropped due to impractical station heights. All three corridors will run at lower elevations than the existing ones, mainly to comply with restrictions from the Airport Authority.

Shamshabad Airport to Future City will be the longest, 40 km in all. The terminal station at the airport will be underground. From the airport to ORR at Raviryal, the line will remain elevated. From there, it’ll dive below ground through the median of a new greenfield road for the final 18 km.

The alignment at JBS, now a central junction for all three routes, was finalised in line with the CM’s push to develop it into an international-grade hub.

Metro Phase 2B is being pitched as a joint venture. DPRs have proposed a cost-sharing formula: 30% by the state, 18% by the Centre, 48% via bank loans, and the remaining 4% through Public-Private Partnership (PPP).

Next step – Cabinet nod. Then it heads to Delhi.
