Hyderabad: In a coordinated operation, Hyderabad police arrested two men allegedly involved in selling ganja, seizing a total of 1.6 kilograms of the contraband. The arrests, made by the Commissioner’s Task Force North Zone team along with Marredpally and Gandhinagar police, come amid intensified efforts to curb drug trafficking in the city.
The accused, identified as Bandhal Ganapathi Lakhan (28) and Jerripothula Teja (25), both residents of Secunderabad, were picked up from different locations. Police said Lakhan, who worked as an electrician, turned to selling ganja to fund his lavish lifestyle. He allegedly roped in his friend Teja, who works at an electrical shop in Ranigunj, to finance the operation.
According to investigators, Teja arranged ₹20,000 for Lakhan to buy the ganja from their Nagpur-based suppliers, identified as Sk. Shabbir and Guddu, who are now absconding. Lakhan reportedly travelled to Nagpur, purchased the ganja, and returned to Hyderabad to distribute it. He allegedly gave half a kilogram to Teja as his share, while keeping 1.1 kilograms for himself.
Acting on a tip-off, police nabbed Teja on May 30 and found 500 grams of ganja in his possession. The very next day, they tracked down Lakhan near Jubilee Bus Station in Secunderabad and seized 1.1 kilograms of the drug from him.
Along with the ganja, police also confiscated two mobile phones. The total haul is estimated to be worth around ₹65,000 on the street.
Both suspects have been booked under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, with cases registered at Marredpally and Gandhinagar police stations.
The operation was led by Taks Force Inspector P. Raghavender, with support from Inspectors N. Venkatesh (Marredpally) and N. Bose Kiran (Gandhinagar), and Sub-Inspectors C. Raghavendra Reddy, Srinivasulu Dasu, and P. Gnanadeep from the North Zone Task Force.
Task Force DCP Y.V.S. Sudheendra informed that efforts were underway to trace and arrest the main suppliers, who are believed to be operating out of Nagpur.
